The Collingwood Curling Club has set the hacks and is aiming for a full house this season with registration coming up next week.

On Oct. 11, curlers will slide into the 2022/23 season with all sheets open and capacity limits ended.

John Kutcy, a director on the club’s board, is looking forward to all the sweeping and says the sport delivers more than just a physical outlet.

“There’s also the social aspect of it,” said Kutcy, who has been curling for seven years. “Everybody watches the games on TV and knows something about curling but what I found … is most people see it as much as a social club as they do a club to be engaged in sporting activity.”

The Collingwood Curling Club is aiming to sign up about 550 members this season, for league play, jitney, and their learn-to-curl mentorship programs.

This year, the club will also be bringing back the junior programs for youth aged 12 and up.

“We have not had a junior league for the last two years because of COVID,” said Kutcy. “The team is working on the junior program and hoping to re-engage with schools to get it going.”

The club offers league play and jitney options, which is curling lingo for “pick-up” games. Players of any age and ability are welcome to join the drop-in jitney games, which run from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. There will also be jitney games on Thursdays from noon to 2 p.m. and Tuesday and Friday evenings from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m.

League play options includes mixed, men’s or ladies formats during the day or evening.

There will also be weekend bonspiels (tournaments) organized throughout the year.

Registration will be online only and will begin at 7 a.m. on Sept. 12 for returning members and 7 a.m. on Sept. 13 for new members.

League schedules, fees, COVID protocols, and other information is posted on the club website at collingwodocurlingclub.ca.

The Collingwood Curling Club is located at 250 Hume Street.
